Professor Terence Tao of UCLA has been awarded the Fields Medal for his work in harmonic analysis and number theory. The medal is considered by some to be mathematics' equivalent of the Nobel Prize and is award to mathematicians under 40 who have made major contributions to the field. This is the first time the medal has been given to an Australian.
The 31 year old Tao is no stranger to accolades, having become the youngest professor to receive the title at the age of 24 after completing a PhD at Princeton in 1996. He is also the youngest competitor to have won a gold medal in the International Mathematics Olympiad, doing so before he was 13.
